Lighthouses: Bearer of Light and Darkness
In this powerful portfolio, Kevin elevates traditional lighthouse imagery using metaphors and a focus on the lighthouse beam signals themselves, in a multi-dimensional manner. Throughout this series of 12 original oil paintings, Kevin explores our ability as a society to question information and critically examine news sources, pondering questions of fact-seeking, changing journalistic standards, and challenging an evolving definition of what constitutes news for some, largely self-identified 'news' streaming services and social media sites . Kevin began following various warning signals present in the lead-up to our 2016 presidential election, as he witnessed what he sees as a gradual but purposeful distrust and disregard for journalism and a free and uncensored press, increasingly replaced with misinformation, disinformation and pure propaganda as found in dictatorships and other autocratic nations.
Viewers of these artworks may recognize other influences derived from Kevin's varied professional and personal roles, namely his insights gleaned from his flights as an Instrument-Flight-Rules (IFR) certified single engine pilot, and native New Yorker who designed and built an early solar home (the second, not the first, in the state of New York, as he is wont to clarify) very near the Montauk New York Lighthouse in 1980. Kevin’s fascination with lighthouses and their signals is both deeply rooted and long-standing.
